STORY FINDER
INVENTOR
OBSERVER
PRODUCER
STORY FINDER.
I think that this is the most wonderful task you can have in our film and TV industry.
Here's the job description.
Usually I work as:
INVENTOR
I root for ideas, experiences, environments, storylines, observations and characters from my own memory and brain, then stories, and then I start to research, develop and create a new show.
OBSERVER
I read books or scripts (and option them) or newspapers, listen to people's tales or visions, their fears and hopes, watch tragedies and slapstick scenes. If you have real life as your best mate, you never run out of stories.
PRODUCER
I brainstorm with writers, directors, broadcasters, co-producers, distributors, actors, experts and fruit cakes to find a unique story, tailor-made for a target audience, for a TV slot. I join other colleagues' projects at an early stage and help to bring them to life. Or I come across a brilliant and already quite advanced product, then I co-produce, executive produce, bring money from my territories to the table, help to package and sell the whole parcel.
STORY FINDER is an easy job. All you need is creativity, experience, an approved industry network, communication skills, the ability to listen and to motivate. A gut feeling for the potential success and feasibility of stories (which might also generate a lot of episodes or sequels).
The bottom line is:
Just be open minded, nosy, perseverant, an adventurer, an explorer, a scout, a busy bee, a night owl, a juggler, a worker, a scholar, a renaissance man in the here and now, a philanthropist.
That's it. A piece of cake.
